More about Sabrina…
How did you decide to become a doula?
Working with families in all the varied ways babies arrive is a passion of mine. I have been fascinated with birth since I was a young child. I was raised around animals and would always be sure I attended as many of their births as I could. I got very good at being patient and learning that birth happens at all hours! I started studying childbirth as a midwifery student and birth assistant in 2001 at the School of Traditional Midwifery, in Florida. During that time, I found that my true calling was doula work. I wanted to give support to folks differently than I could as their medical provider, and becoming a doula granted me that capacity.
In 2004 I graduated as a Florida licensed massage therapist and began my work serving families. I had a busy practice giving prenatal and postpartum massage, teaching infant massage, attending births and offering postpartum support. I made a conscious decision to tuck my business away when I gave birth to my son in 2008, knowing that I would one day begin again.
We moved to Western NC in 2012. During the time that I paused to raise my son, I still attended births and continued my education. Those classes have included Birthing From Within, Birth Story Listening; Pam England, Doula and Postpartum classes with Original Instructions School, Doula certification with the Matrona, and continuing massage therapy.
What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?
I love to explore! I love meandering around our mountains finding all the magic they offer in the flora and fauna and the grand vistas or emerald, green mosses atop rocks. I also enjoy having tea and working on crafts.
If you could take a month long trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?
This is tough because I have wanted my whole life to live here in the Appalachians, and their beauty is hard to want to get away from!
Tell us something about yourself that we may be surprised to learn.
As a beekeeper I had the privilege of watching 3 swarms arrive on my deck, just outside my window. Since then, I have participated in many more swarm arrivals. But those first are near and dear to my heart.
